Press release 20 January 2025

A memorial event dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the January 20 tragedy was held in Washington, D.C.

A memorial event dedicated to the 35th anniversary of January 20 - National Day of Mourning - was held in Washington, D.C.

The event, organized by the Azerbaijani Embassy in the United States and held at the Azerbaijan Trade and Culture Center, was attended by embassy staff, representatives of the Azerbaijani community, including Azerbaijani students studying in this country.

At the memorial event, the dear memory of the martyrs of January 20 was commemorated with a minute of silence.

Delivering his opening speech at the event, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States Khazar Ibrahim said that January 20 was not only an important historical event for Azerbaijan, but also a message of independence and sovereignty for other nations. "We will never forget our martyrs. We will keep their names and noble thoughts alive. At the same time, we will try to make Azerbaijan stronger with our work and, especially, to make these events more widely known in the United States," he noted.

According to the Ambassador, in previous years, people simply talked about how tragic January 20 was and what happened, but today, students and community representatives are already making proposals to promote that day in the United States, including at universities and in the press.

Ambassador Khazar Ibrahim added that the unity of the Azerbaijani people will always continue: "Our Supreme Commander-in-Chief has brought us victories together with our martyrs and soldiers. I am sure that we will continue to increase the number of these victories together."

As part of the event, a corner dedicated to "Bloody January" was created at the Azerbaijan Trade and Culture Center. The corner displayed information about the January 20 tragedy and photographs reflecting the horrific moments of the event.
