Economic relations

The economic relationship between Azerbaijan and the United States has been one of the main pillars of bilateral cooperation, deeply rooted in shared strategic interests, particularly in energy and trade. This partnership started following Azerbaijan's independence in 1991, when U.S. companies played significant role in the development of Azerbaijan's oil and gas sector. Over the years, the relationship has diversified, encompassing various sectors.

Azerbaijan is the largest U.S. trading partner in the South Caucasus, and the United States ranks as the second-largest investor in Azerbaijan. In addition, over 250 U.S.-invested companies are registered in Azerbaijan.

Key agreements that have shaped this relationship include the Agreement on Trade Relations (1993) and the Agreement on Mutual Protection and Promotion of Investment (1997) between the governments of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States of America.

The Azerbaijan-U.S. Economic Partnership Commission, established in 2007, has further institutionalized economic relations, with meetings held in both Baku and Washington.

Moreover, organizations such as the U.S.- Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce and the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan provide valuable platforms for building long-term business relationships, facilitating trade missions, conferences, and partnerships between government and business leaders.

Energy cooperation remains a key pillar of the bilateral relationship. The involvement of U.S. companies in the "Contract of the Century" and subsequent support for the Southern Gas Corridor underscore the United States' commitment to Azerbaijan's role in ensuring regional and European energy security. The extension of production-sharing agreements and the continued involvement of U.S. companies in Azerbaijan’s energy projects, including the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli deep-water fields, highlight the ongoing strategic partnership in this vital sector.

Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on 8 August 2025, Azerbaijan-U.S. economic relations have gained renewed momentum, focusing on strategic investment and regional connectivity. The partnership envisions collaboration in energy, trade, and transit, including the expansion of energy investments and regional infrastructure projects. Economic cooperation also extends to artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
