Traditional Azerbaijani Men’s Attire Displayed at Exhibition at the President Woodrow Wilson House Museum
The President Woodrow Wilson House Museum in Washington, D.C., hosted “Fashioning Power, Fashioning Peace” - the third annual exhibition dedicated to the national costumes of countries around the world. With the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United States, Azerbaijan’s traditional national attire was also featured at the exhibition.
This year, Azerbaijan was represented by a traditional men’s costume symbolizing the delegation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic that participated in the Paris Peace Conference and met with then-U.S. President Woodrow Wilson.
Press Secretary of the Embassy of Azerbaijan to the United States, Jamila Mammadova, noted that the attire displayed at the museum reflects not only Azerbaijan’s rich national heritage, but also an important chapter in the country’s diplomatic history and conveys a message of peace.
Executive Director of the President Woodrow Wilson House Museum, Elizabeth Karcher, thanked the embassies and partners participating in the exhibition, emphasizing that the main purpose of the event is to demonstrate the power of fashion and use it as a means of delivering messages of peace to a broader audience.
National costumes from more than 60 countries were showcased at the exhibition. In addition, a special magazine featuring photographs of the displayed attire was published. The Azerbaijan section of the magazine provided information about the fabrics and materials used in the costume, as well as the meeting between the Azerbaijani delegation and President Woodrow Wilson during the Paris Peace Conference, which marked one of the early stages of U.S.-Azerbaijan relations.
The exhibition remained open through May 9th.
